LONDON TOURISM INFORMATION

visitlondon.com is the official site for London tourism and will give you a good range of up to date information to help you plan your trip. It tells you about what is available and shows you where different places are.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN LONDON

Transport for London - This has a lot of good information about travel in London . It has maps, ticket prices, a journey planner and warnings of current and future service problems.

Double decker and bendy buses are part of the London experience and some of the new London Underground stations are amazing pieces of architecture. We may suggest using buses, tubes, river boats and the Docklands Light Railway in your trips where they fit in with what you want to see and do and your timetable.

MAPS

All Underground, or 'tube', stations have free tube and bus maps. If you want to buy a street atlas of London consider whether you need one covering the whole of London or just the centre. Be sure to buy one with a map scale large enough to read it comfortably.

BUS TRIPS FOR TOURISTS

Bus trips with commentaries are a good introduction to London if you have not visited the city before. The best known are The Big Bus Company and The Original London Sightseeing Tour

PUBLIC BOAT TRIPS

See The River Thames guide and The London Waterbus Company which runs trips to the Zoo, Little Venice and Camden Lock

EATING OUT

We recommend as the most consistently reliable guide to places to eat, 'Time Out London Eating and Drinking'. It is well organised and easy to find your way round and to use. The 2007 edition costs £10.99 over the counter or £7.99 dirctly from www.timeout.com/restaurants

MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES

These are generally free but you may have to pay if you want to see special exhibitions. For up to date details see visitlondon.com

OPERA AND MUSIC

London has two opera houses, two major arts centres and a number of concert venues. There are also music festivals at certain times of the year. For up to date details see visitlondon.com

THEATRE

There are a lot of theatres in London - you may like to look at the site of The Society of London Theatre. This details what is on and has some good advice on buying cut price tickets
